I love the outback of Australia, this image is from Mulga Well in outback South Australia. This image was captured with a Nikon D700 camera.

As a photographer the best time of day is early morning or late evening to capture the best images, at least that is my favourite time.

Photographers need to have their camera with them at all times. There is no point being at a place when the light is beautiful but you have left your camera at home.

Nitmaluk Gorge

There are beautiful gorges around Katherine in the Northern Territory. A cruise up the Nitmaluk Gorge is a wonderful photographic experience. To cover a cruise in an area such as this all you need with your Nikon Digital camera is a couple of lenses, one a zoom with a range of around 17-55mm and possibly a telephoto lens of around 300mm in case you see any crocodiles as you do not really want to get too close to any of those.

Touring around the outback of Australia will give you exceptional photographic opportunities.

Night Time Landscapes – Brisbane River

Never forget that landscape images can be taken at night time. In fact with the current day Nikon cameras they perform to produce excellent images in very dark lighting. Night images will even be far better if you take the trouble to use a tripod and cable release to keep the camera and lens outfit steady. For night photography in low light it is great advantage to use low aperture Nikon lenses and higher camera ISO settings.

Many current lenses are available with apertures of f/2.8 and even down to f/2.0 and f/1.4 to enable very low light captures.

This long exposure of the SS Dickey has been captured with Nikon equipment. There is not very much difference now between many of the Digital SLR camera manufacturers, however you do need to do your research to determine the best equipment to use. Currumbin Rock Pools

This image at the Currumbin Rock Pools has been captured using a 10-stop ND (neutral density filter) to enable me to use a very long exposure of 2 minutes. The camera used was a Nikon D700 and the Nikon 24-120mm lens set at 120mm. The long exposure enables me to get a dreamy type effect to the water due to the movement over 2 minutes.

Sand Pumping Jetty

This image has been captured with a Nikon 24-120mm lens at 52mm. A general purpose zoom lens such as this is very nice as a walk around lens, as it has a reasonable large zoom range.

There is an extremely large range of lenses available to select from briefly summarised in these Nikon Lens Reviews. Some lenses cover a wider range but generally those lenses do not offer the same image quality. The best image quality is obtained with either a fixed focal length prime lens or with a zoom lens with

smaller zoom range.

Wet Weather Landscapes

Sometimes it is difficult to know what to photograph when it is wet. In this case I did not want to get wet myself, so I decided to just take an image of the water drops on the window of the car with an out of focus building in the background. This image has been captured with the Nikon 24-120mm G VR lens which is reviewed in these Nikon Lens Reviews.

I find this lens to be very useful as a general walk around lens covering a wide focal length range of 24 to120mm. It is very suited to landscape photography.

Many Nikon DSLR cameras are suitable for this type of photography but I believe it is really the lens that gets the results. The lens can alter the perspective of the image and give a vastly different look.

General Purpose Lenses for Landscapes

This image was captured in Tokyo Japan and has been captured with a Nikon D2H, DX, format camera with the Nikkor, Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX Lens. This lens is excellent as a general all purpose walk around lens, it has a low aperture f/2.8 for low light shooting and has a great focal length range of 17-55mm for general shooting. This lens is quite sharp at its lowest aperture setting of f/2.8.

Walk Around Lenses

Much of photography is about memories. This image of the Church was taken in Christchurch, New Zealand, using film many years ago. Since the earthquake much of it now lies in ruins.

Images such as this can be captured using a walk around zoom lens. With a Nikon DX camera a lens such as the 17-55mm f/2.8 or similar is very suitable.

With an FX, full frame camera a lens such as a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom is excellent. There is an excellent summary with Nikon lens reviews at this Digital Photography site.
